July 20: The fifth meeting of the National Steering Committee (NSC) on REDD+ was held under the chairmanship of the Federal Secretary, Ministry of Climate Change on 20th July, 2017. The primary objective of the meeting was to update the National Steering Committee on progress of the REDD+ readiness preparation activities in Pakistan.
The participants of the meeting included Provincial and Federal Secretaries of the relevant government departments, representatives of local forest communities / forest rights holders, forest industries, Civil Society Organizations and women representatives. National REDD+ Office and the international consulting firms presented their activities and discussed the issues and way forward. M/s Indufor Oy, finland presented the National REDD+ Strategy framework and vision for Pakistan. Similarly, M/s Arbonaut Oy, finland gave an overview of the technical systems required for monitoring of forests on regular basis.
The meeting concluded with emphasis on the role of REDD+ in conserving the forest resources of Pakistan with firm commitments to address the safeguards.
